CGT-exempt gold coins

Certain UK legal-tender coins may fall outside the charge to UK Capital Gains Tax on disposal. This follows legal-tender status, not the mint and not the purity — which is why a Sovereign may qualify and a 999.9 fine Maple Leaf does not.

The coins below carry a CGT-exempt classification in our catalogue, each traced to a published source with a review date.

Important limitations

This is general information, not tax advice. Treatment depends on current legislation and your own circumstances, and it can change. Verify the current position with official HMRC guidance or a qualified adviser before relying on it.

The exemption only matters if you would otherwise have a taxable gain above your annual allowance. For a modest holding sold gradually, the practical benefit may be nil — in which case a cheaper non-exempt coin could leave you better off.

Not all Sovereigns are in the same position. Very old coins differ from modern ones, and we do not classify a product as exempt unless we can point at a source.
