Best-value gold coins

Ranked by premium over spot rather than by price. The premium is the part of the transaction you control: the gold price is the same everywhere, so the coin with the smallest margin over its metal value is the most efficient way to buy gold.

Mixed-year and secondary-market coins dominate this list, and that is the point. They contain identical gold to their current-year equivalents without the premium attached to a specific date.

Lowest premium is not the whole story

A low premium on the way in is only half the round trip. What you eventually get back depends on the buyback spread, and a coin with a slightly higher purchase premium but a deeper resale market can leave you better off overall.

Krugerrands and Maple Leafs usually carry lower premiums than Sovereigns and Britannias, but they are not UK legal tender and so do not carry the same Capital Gains Tax position. That trade-off is worth understanding before optimising purely for premium.
